Sweep It Up! These Are The Biggest Hair Trends For 2023

Change is as good as a holiday

By Astrid Taemets | 26th October 2022

With the end of the year also comes the time to question your routine and ask yourself: am I ready for a change? Nothing commemorates the start of a new year quite like a new ‘do,

Whether you’re ready to make the cut or shake things up in other ways, take advice from Jaye Edwards, EdwardsAndCo owner, founder, and colourist who knows what’s predicted to be big in 2023.

We asked him to give us his top trends for the new year (plus threw in a few cheeky ones of our own), so we can all benefit from his knowledge and get a jumpstart on the hairstyles, cuts, and colours that are about to be major in 2023.

STYLE

The flip bun

You know that bun you throw your hair up into to cleanse at night? Yep, that’s the one. It’s trending – and not just in your bathroom. Bringing with it a kind of can’t-be-bothered cool-girl edge, try wearing it on occasions you’d normally put some effort into. Like for instance, a black-tie event or fancy girls lunch. A style that’s supposed to look like you barely tried, the flip bun takes very little to achieve, and we’re here for it. Thanks for making it official, KK.

The classic blow dry

Gone are the days of asking your hairdresser to style your hair with waves at the end of your appointment – the simple, classic blow-dry is taking the stage. Skip the wand step in your normal styling routine and let your blowy do all the talking. Oooh, she’s bouncy.

The side part

Get some air (literally) by mixing up your usual down-the-centre style with a deep side part. Changing up the way your hair sits will naturally allow for volume and looks chic no matter what your hair length, making for a refreshing just-off-the-beach look.

CUT

High-textured bob

News flash: a bob doesn’t always have to be short and sleek. This summer, expect to see plenty of above-the-shoulder chops strutting around town. It’s the perfect length to add texture and choppy layers to, giving the illusion of more thickness and volume. Tick, tick. This lived-in look offers a playful alternative to the super structured style for a low maintenance, more carefree approach to mane taming.

Bardot bangs

Hey, you big flirt. Characterised by its effortless, French-girl unkempt look, Bardot bangs are here to stay. Creating a contour style around your face with shorter lengths starting at the centre and then lengthening out through the temples, this is a fun way to add interest to your look.

Shullets

Otherwise known as the wolf cut, a shullet is an ode to the mullet, with a modern twist. With no definitive cut to categorise it, the shullet ranges from extreme and super short on top with length at the back, to a more subtle interpretation with choppy layers creating the illusion or silhouette of the style, meaning you don’t have to go full Joe Dirt on your mane.

COLOUR

Rich brunette

Blame Hailey – not La Niña – for your sudden urge to keep it darker. Swapping out bleached locks for a warm, rich, and dynamic hue similar to Mrs B is a surefire way to stay ahead of the crowd in 2023. Hyper-feminine and relaxed, this hue proves our move towards a more natural beauty approach.

Strawberry blonde

Yowza, did someone bring the heat?! Peachy, copper, and strawberry tones are here to stay, bringing vibrancy to more subdued reds, while simultaneously adding warmth to your sun-kissed skin.

90s blonde

It’s taking over your closest, and now it’s set to infiltrate your hair, too. Nineties blonde is back in a biiiig way, and it’s steering us from low-maintenance golden blondes to a buttery-like tone that’ll require regular glosses and some quality products to keep in check.

Bronze balayage

Forget what you’ve heard – balayage is here to stay. This particular shade is great for brunettes looking for a low maintenance way to lighten things up, and bring warmth to the face. Defined by its natural and lived-in appearance, this hue remains popular for good reason. Faux the sun-kissed look!
